While fast food restaurants are taking all the blame for the massive growth in weight problems, it is really the general public’s fault, not the restaurants. Obesity in America is on the rise. It doesn’t help that everywhere we go whether it’s a big city or even a small rural town, you will find a McDonalds. All throughout America we are getting lazier, and we like fast food. If the fast food industry decided to just shut down every restaurant in the nation, its true we might see a decrease in the gross national weight, but Fast food is the core of our weight problems; and while people know about the health concerns of eating at a fast food restaurant it won’t stop them from going through that drive through to get a tasty burger.
Scientists predict that by 2030, 42% of the American lower class will be obese from eating at these fast food industries, which is about 32 million lower class Americans. There it is again, the say that it is because of the fast food restaurants. But is it really the restaurants fault? The only thing that these restaurants should be blamed for is having such cheap, delicious food. Since their food is so cheap it then really focuses on a main target group, the lower class Americans. They may not be specifically targeting them, but studies show that the main consumer of food from these establishments, are Americans who qualify for the category of “lower class”. I’m also not saying this from a condescending stance; I too used to be in this position. My mother, father, and I were all lower class, obese people and we would constantly be eating at these restaurants. Yes, it’s true that it may have been partially the restaurants fault because their food is fattening. But really it was our own fault, not the restaurants. We were the ones going there to eat; we chose to go their based on our own opinions and choices because it was cheap and benefited us and the life that we had.
As the obesity epidemic grows more in America the “blame game” is a constant argument. Is it the restaurants fault or the general public’s fault? Still, the restaurants are not to blame here. Our general daily lives also play a big role in the situation of our nation’s obesity. Lack of exorcise, sedentary work environment, over consumption of food also play key roles in this. In saying that it is all the fast food restaurants fault is just easier than blaming ourselves, as human beings we like to put the blame on others, it’s our natural instinct. But just because it is fast, and convenient we like to blame the fast food restaurants exactly for that reason, it is convenient. But the fact that it is convenient shouldn’t be the cause of this. Instead of taking your family to the restaurant, you can easily make them a quick sandwich at home with some chips and bring that in the car with you. It is a simple as that. There is that old saying “you are what you eat” and eating at fast food restaurants, you know you are eating fattening foods, so by doing this you are taking responsibility for what you eat. Blaming fast food restaurants for obesity would be like blaming car companies for car accidents, it isn’t their fault they just made it. You are the one who is responsible after that.
One cannot justly blame fast food establishments for their obesity problems, when they are the sole reasons that they are obese. Fast food restaurants are here simply for our convenience, not for us to over indulge ourselves on it and get obese. Yes, their food may be extremely fattening, but that isn’t an excuse for you to blame them for your weight problems. You are in control of your life; you make the decisions that set the course (and weight) for your own life.
